# 49 World Wide SketchCrawl at Namsangol Hanok Village

traditional crafts shop, 31 x 23 cm

traditional wedding ceremony of Lee Hwa and Christopher Cabrera

Taegwondo demonstration at main plaza

It was very foggy in the early morning. But it got clearer and shiny even hot after noon. Namsangol Hanok Village was very busy with tourists and citizens. It was more crowded for it was a Saturday. Eight sketchers joined : Lee Yong-hwan, Yun Young-sook, Ku Bon-ok, Mona Kwon, Yoo Byung-hwa and new comers, Shin Jeong-sheop, Jo Seong-eun, Lee Chung-geun. Though we know well about our traditional houses it's not easy at all to draw them exactly. Most of us live in apartments or modern houses. We recall past times drawing them in the village where valuable houses in land were moved from the original sites. Hanok can be transferred as it is by its dividable materials, wood and roof tiles. I could meet a traditional wedding ceremony. But it was too late to draw all the process of the wedding. The couple seemed to be from China for the guests used Chinese language. Foreign couple like to hold a wedding in Korean traditional way. In the afternoon there was a Taegwondo demonstration in main plaza. Lots of people gathered and enjoyed applauding so much. But drawing their action was another matter for sketchers. How hard to capture the instant pose of smashing pine boards would be!
At four o'clock we shared all the works at the plaza. Thank you all!

sketches at the Amusement park, Children's Grand Park

carousel flying chair, pencil, watercolor, A 4

a boy assembling his motor bikes in the park, pen, watercolor, A 4

Days ago I went to Children's Grand park to enjoy the beautiful autumn days and to sketch too. There are many interesting and thrilling vehicles for visitors. I used to sketch one of them though most of them are very complicated and hard to draw. This time I chose the flying chair. But it was an ordinary day, so the big machine was rare to move for rare riders. I waited for them to ride and move. I could complete seeing several times' running of the machine. Every time there was shrieks of the riders. People do voluntarily paying money to feel thrills.
I moved to the playing field. There were nice chairs and tables with shade. A young grand mother and a kid sat. I took a seat and began to draw him. But I was not sure whether he'd leave soon or not I took a photo before he left. I was right! They left before I completed washing the sketch. While sketching this one a woman of my age came to me saying "Wow you're painting!" We kept talking over one hour. It's mysterious for unknown people to talk honestly about past aching matters without any measuring thoughts which could happen between well known ones. We promised to meet again in the park unexpectedly some days.
It was a nice day with fine weather in park.

Last weekend, during the Chuseok (추석), Korean Thanksgiving holidays, I visited Cheonggyecheon and sketched the colorful sceneries walking along the stream for two days. The Cheonggyecheon is a stream running through central Seoul from west to east. There are 22 bridges that cross the stream and every bridge has its own historic name and unique form. Until it was restored in 2005, Cheonggyecheon Stream existed only as a neglected waterway hidden by an overpass. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a haven of natural beauty amidst the bustle of city life.
The weather was so fine all through the Chuseok holidays, I enjoyed sketching several cityscapes from Cheonggye Plaza (청계광장) to Pyeonghwa Fashion Town (평화패션타운) near Dongdaemun Gate.
.

It was a fine day with some breezing. Six sketchers met at the Cheonggyecheon. We greeted each other. As always the long stream was crowded with visitors from inland and overseas. The place may be one of the greatest sketching spots by water, people and high-risen buildings in back ground. We had lunch at chinese restaurant and moved to Jogyesa located at downtown nearby. Sharing and enjoying all the works was on 3:30 pm. YH Lee and I walked Insa street visiting Insa Art Center appreciating some art works and Nagwon Musical instrument arcade and Unhyeongung together. We had supper at Korean dimsum restaurant and watched Eric's producing event video of Chinese Lantern Festival which will be held in New Zealand. We hoped his events to be successful too.
Thanks all the participants : Mona Kwon, Eric Ngan, Chung Hae-kwon, Andy Oh, Lee Yong-hwan, Yoo Byung-hwa.

Jeon Tae-il statue at Cheonggyecheon bridge, pencil, watercolor, 25 x 25 cm

Walking along the streal to the East gate we sketched scenes. What impressed me was the statue of Jeon Tae-il who burnt himself to death for the laborers' rights. Cheonggyecheon holds endless stories of workers, industries, and devolopment of Korea. His statue made me think about them. Two days' sketching at Cheonggyecheon was not enough to capture all. We should keep for better and more. Thanks!
