crane trucks on cold days

working scene at an electronic pole, Nogbeon-dong, Eunpyeong district, Seoul

charcoal, A 4
As you know it's very cold these days. I could pass the Eunpyeong-ro yesterday. I saw a great scene which I couldn't meet often. There were four crane trucks around an electric pole. They seem to change something in my thoughts. The scenery was so complicated with crane trucks, pockets of the extended arms, boughs and twigs, and signal post even that I just looked upward for minutes. And freezing weather was another barrier to me. But I began to sketch with charcoal regardless of results. Challenge to capture such scene was enough.

Today I walked by the former Gong-pyeong building site where a new building was under construction. I saw a tall crane truck inside the yard. I came across the street (Wujeonguk-ro) and looked up. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines and shapes were attractive. Working engineers added another focus too.

at Seoul Zoo, Gwacheon City

lift car building near the entrance
It passes over a lake. In winter season people wouldn't like to use it, perhaps. I couldn't see people in lift cars while I was drawing this one. Snow on southern side of the roof was melted to show the original color.

Snow remained on shade roofs and ground.
Animals such as gemsboks, zebras, and giraffes were in interior cages due to cold weather.

inside the botanical garden
It was so warm that I had to put off my long winter jacket.

charcoal, pastel, sepia conte, 25.7 x 35.7 cm sketchbook
I could see them inside the tropical animal building through the pane glass very closely.
I feel fully refreshed when I come home after staying all day in park despite of cold weather.

two sketches in/out on a bitterly cold day

charcoal, A 4
After swimming I walked down to Gwanghwamun to buy some art material at Namdaemun market. On the way at Naejadong, I saw this scene. I couldn't pass over and in the middle point returned to the pedestrian road for sketching across this street. It was so cold that my fingers got numbed. But the shiny light was there contrasted by the vertical dark lines of the Integrated Govermental Building in back.

I had lunch at the Melodies, large scale food court of Kyobo Book Center. After having deliciously I sketched the bustling scene inside of the kitchen. I planned how to capture them while having Gimbab(rice wrapped with black laver within which kinds of vegetable were put in the center) with hot soybean sauce soup.

It took one hour from Oksu Station to Yongmun Station by subway. KW Jung, HS Song and I kept sketching people in subway. We had hot soup and rice as lunch in temperorary snack booth and had other delicious snacks of course in the afternoon. We bought cheap and fresh vegetables after sketching. Thank you!
