Sketching meetup with Nancy Ho from Canada

Sketch by Nancy Ho at Pai Chai HakDang

Nancy Ho(left) sketching with Seoul Urban Sketchers

I've done this one inside the Dunkin Donuts shop waiting for the sketchers to arrive at.

Deoksugung Palace is not big but makes attractive scenes with modern buildings surrounding it. I could see newer scenery though I visited there so many times.

I tried charcoal to express the volume of big gate and roof seen through the empty space of open doors. I used yellow color of pastel in Chinese characters on signboard.
30 x 42.5 cm (A3)

When I sat on bench in front of fountain a photographer was taking picture. I captured his pose rapidly with brush pen and added pastels. Movement of human in motionless old architecture gave fresh feelings. But the scenery varied by light, breeze, shadow...

I sat beside the Pai Chai HakDang building looking at the Daycare center of Seoul City Hall. The building looks different according to the capturing spot. I drew it several times before. Red brick color looked harmonious with the Pai Chai HakDang.

It was really fine day. Because it was an ordinary day the palace was not crowded with visitors so we could enjoy the beautiful weather and architectural scenery. After having lunch we moved to nearby educational building consisted with old memorable building and contemporary one. We gathered to sketch with Nancy Ho. She thanked for the moments of sketching and sharing. Of course we enjoyed the meeting too. Wish her to keep traveling and sketching all the countries!

The following sketch was done by Zheng Xiong Xiang from Chine who has met at the observatory. He had shown interest and kept seen our works and had done this being requested. He kept his sketching tools in his sack. We just enjoyed sketching together unexpectedly. I told him about the activity of urban sketchers and city blogs all around the world recommending him to join after visiting the blogs. He visited the place on the way going to the Seoul Museum of Art located nearby.

I drew Margo while she was drawing her work.

I sketched the scenery at the small garden of Gyeongin Gallery after having dimpling with Margo using sepia conte.

I drew the above three pieces at the observatory with watercolor.

Margo took me to the nearby coffee shop 'Terarosa' and bought me a cup of coffee 'caffe latte'. The cafe was decorated with kinds of tools for making coffee. I tried one within short time. I sketched before having it not to ruin the pretty shape on the surface of coffee.

Zheng Xiong Xiang was drawing with his sketching tools.

Several days' sketching together was meaningful for all of us. Sharing and encouraging was great. Unexpected meeting with unknown sketcher gave delight especially. We could be friends instantly putting out paper for drawing. Hope to have chances to sketch together later at somewhere in this globe. Thank you all, Margo and Zheng Xiong Xiang! Wish you to keep sketching anywhere!

Jeongdong is one of the best places for urban sketching in downtown Seoul. There are a lot of attractive subject matters for sketching such as beautiful Deoksugung Palace(덕수궁), stonewall walkway(돌담길), various church buildings, museums, modern architectural
properties and the traditional festivals for many tourists and visitors. I liked such subjects and enjoyed sketching around Jeong-dong for a long time. Every time I sketch, it’s a new experience.
Last Saturday, usk Seoul members including many new comers met together around Deoksugung Palace and had a good sketch time. I painted a buildingscape in watercolors on the Jeongdong-gil street in the morning. After lunch, I went up to the Jeongdong Observatory (정동 전망대) on the 13th floor of Seoul City Hall Seosomun Annex Building (서소문 청사). The beautiful panoramic views of numerous buildings through the window fascinated me. I painted another buildingscape in watercolors looking down from the Observatory inside the building. It was a very pleasant sketch time to paint watercolors.

Sketches in June sketching meetup

When I was walking the Jeongdong gil before I began to sketch I met a guy who had lived in my village for years. He was going to his stand to sell his goods in the street. Alongside the street there were lots of stands where many creative craft producers were spreading their unique works. I was so glad to meet him. He told me that he got a patent for this product which could be used as memo or sketch pad and presented this to me. He said that he noticed that the receipt roll paper in shops could be used in different way. He showed the other bigger one. As soon as I received this I tried it sketching the scenery with the Deoksugung(palace) wall.  After I used it I showed the picture to him and bought the bigger one for sketching. He felt so good to see that his product was used in proper way. I think it's good for me to decide the size of horizontal length as long as I want. I admired his creative efforts and encouraged him. Suwon urban sketcher, Mr. Song Kee Sung, bought the small one and tried to use.

Deoksugung Palace Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony

It was cloudy a little. But everybody might have waited it to rain because of terrible hot weather. The main entrance of Deoksugung was busy as usual with tourists and citizens and demonstrators. But people enjoy to see the guard changing ceremony in the morning taking photos.
